Russia’s online economy was worth R1.94 trillion (€27.38 billion) in 2015, according to the Russian Association of Electronic Communications (RAEK).
However, reports Kommersant, while this was equivalent to 2.4% of GDP, its rate of growth was down by almost half due to the effects of the economic crisis.
Online sales of digital content grew by 13%, and within that video sales rose by 9% to R3.8 billion.
Significantly, smartphones were a major driver for online, accounting for a quarter of the market overall and between 80-90% for such services as digital content.
