France Télévisions has launched what is the first customised mobile TV service operated by a broadcaster in France.
La Tribune reports that it is known as FranceTV Zoom and has been available as a free download the Apple Store since Tuesday, June 3 and will also be offered to Android users by the end of this year.
With FranceTV Zoom, France Télévisions hopes it has found a way to retain mobile users to its service.
The app competes with YouTube by providing short and incisive content on the go, while it also competes with Netflix by using the principle of automatic recommendation algorithms.
France Télévisions currently has no target for downloads of FranceTV Zoom, regarding this as a test period.
However, if the experience of FranceTV Pluzz is anything to go by, viewers will probably have to watch commercials every 10 minutes in order for the service to remain free of charge.
The launch of FranceTV Zoom is in line with Delphine Ernotte-Cunci, France Télévisions’ president elect, second screen strategy of “Audace 2020.
In her view, digital is increasingly about mobile, tablets and connected TVs, rather than just the web.
