Piracy continues to be one of the biggest competitors for Netflix.
In its latest letters to investors, Netflix points to a graph of Popcorn Time’s sharp rise relative to Netflix and HBO in the Netherlands, which it calls “sobering”.
The data are supplied by Google Trends and show search terms, not actual usage, but they are certainly an indication of the popularity of the three services.
On the graph, Netflix and Popcorn Time are way ahead pf HBO in terms of searches in the Netherlands.
Popcorn Time has been called the Netflix for pirates, as it is the first site and app giving easy access to torrents in, indeed, a Netflix-like environment. Users can add subtitles in a number of languages.
Last September, research by TorrentFreak found that the service is more popular than Netflix.
