Revamp for BBC News app

January 22, 2015 09.38 Europe/London By Julian Clover

BBC News App Android devicesThe BBC has unveiled a new look to its BBC News app in the first design refresh since 2010.

The redesign will be rolled out to Android and iOS devices in the UK over the next few days and will be available globally in the coming months.

Since the first app made its debut there has been a major shift towards the access of news on handheld devices. Over 50% of users consume BBC News on mobile and tablet, up from 25% at the start of 2012.

Robin Pembrooke, General Manager, News Products, BBC Future Media said, “This is the first redesign of the BBC News app since it launched in 2010. The dynamic new design surfaces a much wider range of our news content – and allows users to follow a personalised list of topics with the BBC. We don’t want to just bring you BBC News on-the-go, but your BBC News on-the-go.”

The BBC says its News app is one of the most popular in the world, with over 40m downloads since it launched, and users in around 200 countries globally.

For the first time local news content is being brought into the app, alongside features and expert journalism from around the world, imagery and video.

There is also the opportunity for users to customise their new experience, choosing topics to follow based on a particular article, or suggestions based on what has already been read.
