Germany’s largest cable operator Kabel Deutschland has commenced offering its customers the possibility to watch selected TV channels using their smartphone or tablet at home.
The TV App provides access to more than 50 unencrypted digital free-to-air TV channels carried on the cable network including Das Erste, ZDF, ProSieben, Sat.1, Tele 5, DMAX and Disney Channel. The distribution to the handheld devices is through the customer’s local Wi-Fi network.
The TV App which Kabel Deutschland announced in August 2014 is initially available for Apple’s iPhone and iPad (iOS) and free of charge for customers subscribing to both TV and internet from the cable company. A version for Android devices will follow shortly.
Kabel Deutschland also introduced two further apps: With the TV Manager App customers can set recordings on their HD digital receiver or HD PVR while on the go and manage their channel and favourites list. It also contains a comprehensive programme guide.
The TV Control App replaces the TV set of both receivers which can then be controlled using a smartphone or tablet. Both apps are available free of charge for iOS and Android devices.
