European Commission appoints Ziggo watchdog

November 13, 2014 07.54 Europe/London By Robert Briel

Ruffled European flagThe European Commission, DG Competition, has appointed a Monitoring Trustee to oversee the acquisition of Ziggo by Liberty Global.

London-based CompetitionRx will monitor whether Liberty Global adheres to the conditions that the European Commission has set when approving the deal.

The conditions include the selling of premium movie channel Film1, access of broadcasters to the Ziggo/UPC network, as well as dropping all restrictions to offer OTT content.

Public and commercial channels will be free to develop OTT services and to offer them over the internet, without affecting their negotiating retransmission of the channels on the Ziggo cable network.

Liberty Global also has guarantee that IP transit meets specified parameters and a good OTT signal will come into the living room.
