The number of subscribers receiving audiovisual retransmission services in Romania doubled from 2.7 million in 2003 to 5.7 million at the end of last year, according to the regulator ANCOM.
The most pronounced growth was seen in the DTH sector, which claimed 2.1 million subscribers, with the highest concentrations being found in rural areas, where the deployment of cable networks is more expensive.
ANCOM also notes even more pronounced growth in the take-up of broadband internet services, with the number (fixed and mobile) rising from 0.2 million in 2003 to 10.8 million at the end of last year.
Significantly, in the fixed internet sector Romania was the leading market in Europe in terms of high speed connections in early 2012, with 45% of total 3.3 million fixed broadband connections being at connection speeds of 30 Mbps or higher.
