BT has announced a further acceleration of its commercial fibre rollout with plans to pass two-thirds of UK premises by Spring 2014.
The new target is some 18 months ahead of the original plan that would have seen the project meet the goal at the end of 2015.
Liv Garfield, BT Openreach chief executive said: “The fact we are able to set an earlier target for the completion of our commercial roll-out is a fantastic testament to the ongoing hard work of our engineers. We look forward to welcoming many more engineers to Openreach over the coming months as we step up our recruitment drive to help connect fibre to more homes and businesses across the UK.”
Announcing its latest financial statements, BT said its total broadband customer base increased by 174,000 during the quarter to stand at more than 17 million for the first time.
BT Vision added 21,000 customers on the quarter to reach over 750,000.
This week BT announced it had reached agreement to cover the top football leagues of Italy, France, Brazil and the United States. The matches will form part of the new BT sports channel that from next year will also have access to two packages of Premier League football.
