CABLE CONGRESS 2012 – BRUSSELS. Free on demand content delivered by cable is becoming increasingly popular in the EU 27, with nearly 8 billion content views expected in 2016, according to Guy Bisson, research director, television, HIS Screen Digest.
In a wide-ranging presentation on the current state of the market and its prospects for the future, he added that pay-TV content now accounted for 92% of on demand revenues.
Multiscreen is becoming a significant part of the bundle and there were 18 multiscreen deployments worldwide by cable operators in 2011.
Bisson also said that there had been a reduction in cable deals in 2011, with the most notable being KBW in Germany and Aster in Poland.
While cable still dominated the pay-TV market in Europe, there were three times more DTH than cable additions in CEE in the last five years despite cable still growing.
Meanwhile in WE, IPTV and DTT grew while cable declined.
Although just under half of all cable homes in the EU27 are digital, they accounted for 65% of total revenues in 2011.
