CABLE CONGRESS 2012 – BRUSSELS. Liberty Global will start rolling out Horizon in the second quarter and introduce the service in the Netherlands, Switzerland, Germany and Ireland this year, according to the company’s CEO Mike Fries.
Speaking in the opening session entitled A view from the top at this year’s Cable Congress, he added that the cost of subscribing to Horizon would only be a few additional euros and has still to be finalised.
In the Netherlands, Horizon would make its debut with an offer consisting of 100 live streamed channels and 4,000 video assets.
Commenting on Germany, Fries said it was the best market he’d seen for decades though at the same time conceded Liberty would face challenges, from Deutsche Telekom, as well as regulatory and political pressures.
Discussing Liberty’s overall strategy, he also said that the company has no plans to offer everyone 100 Mbps internet access, preferring instead to “take a breath” at 50 Mbps.
Even so, it is already putting telcos in a very difficult position.
He added that Liberty would also enter the mobile market over the next few years, though it would take a “capital-light, conservative approach” in doing so.
