CABLE CONGRESS 2012 – BRUSSELS. The BBC would love to launch the iPlayer as a full service outside the UK following the end of its 12-month trial period.
Speaking at the opening session entitled A view from the top, Ian McDonough, SVP &GM for EMEA, BBC Worldwide Channels, said that the service, which made its debut in the UK in 2007, is currently available in 14 European countries plus Canada and Australia.
It differs from the one in the UK by offering a “very deep archive of content” and being paid for.
He also said that the BBC is currently engaged in talks with a number of parties about iPlayer outside the UK and would have no objection, for instance, to it being offered by other parties and being embedded in a box.
