Concerns are growing over the upcoming licensing of IPTV services in Ukraine.
AKTR and Comments report that although the country’s Broadcasting Council plans to start issuing licences this February, there are still huge doubts surrounding the whole process.
As of last autumn the regulator had already received 13 applications, with licences costing around UAH20,000 (€1,915) for small towns and up to UAH500,000 for the capital, Kiev.
A licence previously issued to Kyivstar was cancelled for unknown reasons, while the incumbent Ukrtelecom cancelled plans to launch an IPTV service.
Some believe the Broadcasting Council is incapable of regulating the delivery of content over the internet in Ukraine and should therefore award IPTV licences, if at all, for a reduced fee.
