It has been officially confirmed that RCS&RDS has been seeking to buy UPC Romania.
Quoted in ZF, Bogdan Chiritoiu, the head of the country’s Competition Council, said that discussions with both parties had taken place, though only on a consultative basis and examining the implications any possible deal would have on market competition.
Chiritoiu added that RCS&RDS and UPC Romania argued, and he was willing to accept, that a deal would not create a monopoly, given the growing number of choices that are now available for TV viewers in Romania.
The news that RCS&RDS was on the verge of buying UPC Romania for some $300 million (€211.3 million) was first reported earlier this year.
Should a deal go ahead, it would leave RCS&RDS the undisputed market leader in the pay-TV sector with some 4 million subscribers, or almost four times as many as its nearest competitor, the incumbent telco Romtelecom.
