IP & TV Forum – ISTANBUL. IPTV is making inroads in the Republic of Macedonia despite the dominant position of cable in the marketplace.
According to Ogen Firfov, chief sales director of the incumbent telco Makedonski Telekom (Maktel), his company launched its IPTV service MaxTV in November 2008 and has since tried a number of pricing strategies to win customers.
It also began to offer HBO exclusively and the service is now received by 25% of its 23,445 subscribers (as of September 2010).
However, MaxTV faces strong competition from cable, which is received in almost 300,000 of the Republic of Macedonia’s 570,000 TV homes, and an aggressive DTT platform operated by Telekom Slovenia.
