LOVEFiLM is to become an official partner of the Sony PlayStation 3, placing the movie subscription service into an additional three million households.
As an official PS3 integrated subscription film service partner, LOVEFiLM will be able to stream its movies-on-demand service direct to subscribers’ TVs. In an earlier agreement signed with Sony in March, LOVEFiLM became available on Sony Bravia internet TVs and Blu-ray players.
“This is game-changing for LOVEFiLM and transformational for the UK home entertainment market as a whole,” said LOVEFiLM chief executive Simon Carver. “PS3 already has a very large installed customer base of all ages, all of whom will soon be able to benefit from our unique combination of instantly available content, streamed through their PS3, as well as DVD, Blu-ray & Games rental by post.
The move is part of an ongoing trend by movie subscription and catch-up TV services to place their content on gaming consoles, taking advantage of the internet connectivity already built into the devices.
