Penetration of fixed voice services on Portuguese cableco ZON has overtaken that of broadband in a little over two years.
At the end of Q1 2010, ZON had 646,100 telephony customers, an increase of 62,000 on the quarter, and representing 54.3% of the customer base. This compares with the 635,400 or 54% of the base subscribing to broadband services. ZON points out in its Q1 financial statements that it is the only major operator to have posted growth in its fixed line business this quarter.
Broadband however is not taking it lying down, and it economically challenged Portugal it is a vital component of ZON’s triple play offer. Speeds close to 200 Mbps are available to 2.8 million households, representing 90% of the cable footprint.
ZON has a total of 1.588 million subscribers, including 1.176 million on the cable network, the balance of 412,000 receiving the Hispasat-delivered satellite service.
Consolidated revenues grew by 8.2% to €213.5 million. EBITDA reached €73.3 million, an increase of 17% on the year and 13% on the quarter.
