Tough times for OTE

May 12, 2010 10.43 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

OTE-backed Romtelecom ended the first quarter with 893,757 subscribers to its DTH and IPTV operations.

The latter, named Dolce Interactiv, was launched only at the end of last year and claimed almost 4,000 customers, while the remaining 890,000, 23% up on 12 months earlier, received the Dolce DTH service.

The Romanian telco’s revenues in Q1 were, at €194.8 million, 3.3% down on the corresponding period in 2009. EBITDA meanwhile fell by 20.2% to €59.3 million and operating income was down by 75.9% to €3.3 million.

OTE, Romtelecom’s parent company, completed the expansion of its pay-TV services to most urban areas in Greece in the first quarter, and at the end of March these had 23,424 subscribers.

The total Greek ADSL market at the end of Q1 stood at nearly 2.3 million, compared to 1.8 million a year earlier.

OTE’s revenues were down by 3.1% year-on-year to €1,409.3 million in Q1. EDITDA fell by 34.5% to €478.7 million, while net income was don by 75.5% to €65.8 million.
