New milestone for Russian cableco

January 14, 2010 09.02 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

The Russian cable operator ER-Telecom ended 2009 with 2 million subscribers to its services, or 1.3 times more than a year earlier.

Of these, 48% opted for cable TV, 48% for broadband internet access and 4% for telephony.

Broadband internet was the main driver for growth, with take-up increasing by 78% in 2009. Cable, on the other hand, grew by 19% and telephony by 3%.

The average monthly increase in the broadband subscriber base in 2009 was 31,000, or 9% more than in 2008. However, that for cable was 7,600 households, which was 64% lower than in 2008.

Moreover, there was a net outflow of cable subscribers in both February and March last year.
