Cable, rather than ADSL, is currently driving the take-up of fixed broadband services in Hungary.
Data published by the country’s National Communications Council (NHH) indicates that the number of fixed broadband connections grew by 46,000 in the first quarter and 185,000 in the previous 12 months to reach 1.583 million at the end of March.
The four leading cable operators UPC, T-Kabel, FiberNet and Digi saw their broadband subscriber total rise from 550,000 to 561,000 in March, and given that they account for around 70% of the cable modem market, the total number of cable internet homes at the end of Q1 stood at 779,000.
By comparison, the total number of ADSL subscribers grew by only 2,000 in March to reach 804,000.
