KDG grows pay-TV homes

February 26, 2009 09.42 Europe/London By Julian Clover

Kabel DeutschlandKabel Deutschland (KDG) increased RGUs, revenues and even subscriber numbers in the quarter to December 31, 2008, but still reported a net loss of €28 million, on a par with 2008.

Publishing the results for its third financial quarter, Germany’s largest cablenet said it grew the total number of Revenue Generating Units (RGUs) to 11,386,000 an increase of 8.4% from the previous year.

The number of digital TV subscribers passed the one million mark for the first time, reaching 1,044,900 at the end of 2008, an increase of 52,600 on the quarter and 297,600 on the year. Of these 846,300 were subscribing to a pay-TV service. There is also a growing demand for PVRs (Kabel Digital+), reaching 94,100 by the end of 2008.

Subscribers now take an average of 1.25 RGUs, compared to 1.16 as at December 31, 2007, and still low when compared to other markets. This is reflected in the monthly ARPU of just €11.22, though an increase on the €9.22 of one year ago.
