Telefónica IPTV passes 2 million

November 14, 2008 10.40 Europe/London By Julian Clover

Telefónica’s pay-TV business has passed two million connections; 2.1 million subscribers were hooked up to the IPTV service by the end of the third quarter, representing a 54% increase on the year.

In Spain the number of subscribers stands at 589,551, an increase of 12,993 on the quarter and 78,464 in the first nine months of the year. Many subscribers are signing up to one of Telefónica’s Duo or Trio bundles with 84% of the company’s residential connections coming through such a bundle. Revenues for the Spanish business, including fixed line and mobile activities, increased 2.7% year-on-year in the first nine months, to €9,468 million.

In the Czech Republic O2 TV customers increased by 10,143 to reach 108,061. Revenues for the first nine months in the Telefonica O2 Czech Republic Group were €1,930 million, 5.1% higher in constant currency.

The company has pay-TV operations in Spain, the Czech Republic, Peru, Chile, Colombia and Brazil, whereas in October Telefonica launched its pay-TV services in Venezuela.

Across its businesses, Telefónica confirmed its growth forecasts for 2008.
