Italy and Spain are running ahead of the US and other European countries, when it comes down to the adoption of online and web TV services. A survey undertaken by Strategy Analytics, and covering 3500 Internet users, shows that 22% of Spanish respondents are regular users of streamed videos. In the US the figure is 18% and in Germany only 8%.
The report estimates there to be 32 million people in the US and 34 million in Europe who regularly watch video streamed from the websites of the broadcast networks.
According to Mark Olausson, director of digital media strategies, Strategy Analytics, internet users in Southern Europe are making the most of its capacity to deliver programming choice. “The success of web TV in these countries is in contrast to the relative lack of interest in traditional multichannel TV services from cable and satellite providers,” said Olausson.
In Spain and Italy the popularity of video file sharing popularity, over unauthorised networks, is higher than elsewhere. 66% of Spanish and 55% of Italian respondents admit to engaging in this activity several times a year. In the US this percentage is less than half of the Spanish percentage, not to mention Germany with 18%.
