The Polish public broadcaster TVP will launch its first HD channel at the beginning of August, ahead of the start of the Olympic Games in Beijing.
Local reports say the service, which will be known as TVP HD, will initially operate on a trial basis and offer 18 hours coverage of the Games each day.
It subsequently aims to become a full service – TVP is understood to be applying for a satellite licence from the National Broadcasting Council (KRRiT) today – with 25% of its output allocated to sports programming.
TVP HD will be encrypted and distributed by Astra. It may also be added to the programming being distributed in various DTT trials taking place around Poland.
