A major overhaul of the funding of the Polish public broadcaster TVP, whose services have a combined viewing share of just over 50%, has moved a step closer.
The country’s parliament (Sejm) has proposed changes to existing legislation that will see pensioners and other financially disadvantaged viewers absolved from paying receiver licence fees.
These currently contribute around PLN880 million (€258.1 million) to TVPs annual income, while advertising provides some PLN2 billion.
The phase out of receiver licences fees is opposed by opposition parties, which claim the Civic Platform (PO)-led government is mounting an attack on public broadcasting.
