The German public broadcaster ARD has today started to use a new transponder on the Astra satellite in order to improve picture and sound quality of its broadcasts. The channels Eins Extra, Eins Plus, Eins Festival, Arte and Phoenix will be transmitted on the new capacity.
During the coming weeks all ARD transponders will be rearranged to make higher bit rates possible for both regional and thematic channels.
The move is part of ARD’s strategy to offer the best possible picture quality in MPEG-2 using high bit rates. The broadcaster has chosen to improve the quality of its SD broadcasts rather than start HD because this way all viewers will benefit from a better picture quality rather than the few owners of HD tuners.
