Technical Emmys announced

January 9, 2008 12.35 Europe/London By Julian Clover

Scientific-Atlanta, Tandberg Television, Tektronix, Thomson and CNN all prospered in the 59th Annual Technology & Engineering Emmy Awards at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) presented the awards for broadcast, broadband and personal television.

Awards for “productization, and commercialization of interactive Video-on-Demand” were presented to Time Warner Cable, Scientific-Atlanta and Tandberg’s N2 Broadband.

Rohde & Schwarz, Tektronix, Thomson and Pixelmetrix Corporation were recognised for Monitoring for compliance standards for ATSC & DVB transport streams.

The Emmy Award for Development and implementation of an integrated and portable IP-based live, edit and store-and-forward digital newsgathering system went to CNN. Although CNN first developed the portable digital newsgathering system in 1999, the network has used the kits to their greatest effect over the past two years in Afganistan and Iraq.

One blot on the awards was that the Emmy statuette was not presented to all the winners due to ongoing litigation with the Hollywood-based Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.
