November 19, 2007 15.13 Europe/London By Julian Clover

The winners of the annual Hot Bird TV Awards have been announced in Venice. Now in their 10th year the awards are organised by satellite operator Eutelsat, TV and cinema festival Eurovisioni and conference and exhibition SAT Expo.

The awards are designed to honour the thematic channels that broadcast from the satellite operator’s Hot Bird neighbourhood. The jury viewed 120 channel before compiling a shortlist of 34 based on creativity, programme originality and production quality.

The awards reflect Eutelsat’s heartlands of Italy, Poland and Russia with winners including the Polish children’s channel MiniMini, the Polish and Italian versions of National Geographic’s HD channels and news channel France 24. A special award was presented to France’s AB Sat, which recently announced plans to launch a free-to-air package on Eutelsat’s the Atlantic Bird satellite.
