TALLINN: LEVIRA DIGITAL BROADCASTING CONFERENCE. The next one to three years are a “window of opportunity” for the launch of commercial mobile TV services around the world, according to Prof. Dr. Claus Sattler, the executive director of bmcoforum, He was speaking in a session on mobile TV at Levira’s 2nd Digital Broadcasting Conference in Tallinn and also spelt out the bmcoforum’s position on such areas as standards/interoperability, regulation and spectrum. Representing all sections of the industry and with over 100 members worldwide, the forum is technology neutral and does not consider the mandating of any mobile broadcast technology in Europe as necessary. However, the EC could mandate the use of DVB-H in 2008, and the standard is already used by 73% of all mobile TV services and pilots worldwide, with the two next most popular being T-DMB (10%) and MediaFLO (5.5%). Interestingly, Sattler added that Albania is one of the countries in Europe currently operating a commercial DVB-H operation, though few details about it are available.
