Ericsson has signed up Cypriot incumbent telco CYTA, Cyprus Telecommunications Authority, as its first European customer for a Fibre-To-The-Home (FTTH) network based on the vendor’s GPON (Gigabit Passive Optical Network) equipment.
CYTA currently offers video services to its ADSL subscribers under the miVision brand, including up to two simultaneous HDTV channels per home, as well as on-demand services, Voice over IP (VoIP) and surveillance and security services.
According to Ericsson, the contract includes delivery of central office optical equipment and devices for the homes, EDA1200 and EDA1500, and passive infrastructure such as fibre systems and cables. Apart from the GPON network (point-to-multipoint configuration), the pilot project also includes a point-to-point network, using Ericsson’s equipment (switches and CPEs).
