The Viennese city TV channel Puls TV has applied for a licence to transmit its programmes over satellite. According to Austrian newspaper reports Puls TV prefers satellite carriage over DTT transmission, given the high costs of terrestrial broadcasts. The Austrian local broadcaster Salzburg TV has also applied for a DTH licence.
Digital switchover is well under way in Austria, with most analogue transmitters to be turned off by October. First reports indicate that many Austrian terrestrial homes are now switching to DTH reception rather than to DTT because the current digital terrestrial offer is limited to just three TV channels compared to dozens of German language channels available on the Astra satellite.
