Austria wants to transfer the terrestrial frequency range between 694 and 790 MHz currently used for broadcasting to mobile network operators from 2020.
“Through digitalisation, we will need less bandwidth than today in the broadcast area in the forthcoming years for the same degree of coverage. We will therefore use these frequencies for mobile services in future, thereby strengthening broadband penetration in Austria,” infrastructure minister Alois Stöger said in Vienna.
In Germany, the 700 MHz band was allocated to mobile network operators as part of an auction in May 2015.
