The controversial new ad tax imposed on commercial broadcasters in Hungary could now impact on cable operators and their customers.
According to Portfolio, the broadcasters would like to charge fees to operators that distribute their channels.
However, the government plans to thwart their plan, having submitted a draft law that would ban them from introducing fees until it creates detailed rules on how those fees should be paid.
This could in effect grant the government powers to determine programme fees between broadcasters and those who distribute their channels.
As things stand, the Media Act prevents national terrestrial broadcasters from charging fees until the end of this year.
The government would effectively keep the ban in place with amendments to the Media Act.
