BT is to make its freemium sports channels available on Google’s recently launched Chromecast platform, the Financial Times has reported.
The move is being viewed as a signal that it is prepared to explore alternatives to the YouView broadband platform, though arguably the use of Chromecast could be seen as a means to deliver BT Sport to a second set, or to BT Broadband customers that take their TV from another provider.
The only other UK broadcaster available on Chromecast is the BBC iPlayer.
Chromecast is a dongle that sticks into the back of the TV, where it also needs to be connected to the USB-port in order to power the device.
The dongle can be accessed using a smartphone, tablet or computer. This includes iPhones, iPads, Android devices, Chromebooks, or a computer running Windows, Mac OS or Chrome OS.
