Audiovisual Sports (AVS), the sports rights divison of pay-TV company Sogecable, has denied it has reached an agreement with Mediapro over the rights to top tier Spanish football.
In a statement released yesterday afternoon AVS says it stands by statements the company made in August, which said Mediapro must accept a joint football rights contract signed by the two groups in 2006, and pay a fine in the region of €70 million. Once these terms are accepted, AVS says it will renew the rights agreement.
Mediapro says the contract is no longer valid and disputes the fine. It said it accepted a proposal by AVS managing director Daniel Margalef to share the football rights under the same terms as last year. However, AVS has said Margalef did not have the right to make the proposal, and that he left his position on September 7.
