CeBIT – HANOVER. European Commissioner Viviane Reding once again said the Commission wants to set a European standard for mobile TV and DVB-H is the system of choice. It is a European development and by making it mandatory it will help grow the market further.
In March 2006, also at CeBIT, Reding called upon Member States, industry and other stakeholders to launch a dialogue on mobile TV issues. Since then, together with the industry and national administrations, the European Commission has been working on a pan-European strategy for mobile television.
In Europe 17 countries have now chosen DVB-H as the standard, five countries also support DMB (including Germany and the UK). Reding said the decision process should be hurried up, as the upcoming Euro 2008 soccer tournament will provide an excellent opportunity to promote television-on-the-go.
