Polish news channel TVP Info returned to the air on Friday after a week long suspension.
The public broadcaster was forced to suspend the channel on December 20 after a change in its governance brought about by prime minister Donald Tusk. Programmes resumed at 19.30 CET with an edition of the newly launched 19:30 bulletin.
Presenter Jaroslaw Kulczycki then told viewers the relaunched service “would now give voice to all sides and would aim to unite Poles rather than divide them.”
The channel has new versions of its previous graphics set.
In December, Poland’s newly appointed culture minister Bart?omiej Sienkiewicz dismissed the heads of TVP and Polish Radio, leading to a sit in by the Law and Justice (PiS) party at TVP’s headquarters.
TVP’s main evening news and the TVP Info channel had increasingly been seen as a mouthpiece for the former PiS government. Tusk, the former President of the European Council, was elected in December on a ticket that promised to make Poland’s public broadcaster a platform for “reliable information”.
Following its election in 2015, PiS had increased used the public broadcaster for its own ends, going further than previous administrations. In turn commercial broadcasters including TVN Info had become more critical of the government.
However, TVP remained a popular source of information, particularly within the third of the country unable to receive commercial broadcasts.
