Netflix goes to Latin America and Caribbean

Netflix has announced it will expand to 43 countries throughout Latin America and the Caribbean later this year, offering unlimited TV shows and movies streaming instantly over the internet to TVs and computers for one monthly subscription price.

The age of internet video is upon us, according to a case study about Netflix carried out by Sandvine. “Subscribers have clearly embraced the Netflix streaming service, fundamentally altering the internet landscape. Furthermore, the success of Netflix’ expansion into Canada suggests that it is not a phenomenon localised to the US.”

Amazon launches premium streaming service

Amazon has announced the launch of a new streaming video service offering over 5,000 commercial-free movies and TV shows. Called Amazon Prime, the new service costs $79 (€57.9) a year and is aimed at competing with Netflix and Hulu Plus.

Netflix arrives on the Boxee Box

Amazon to challenge Netflix with streaming service

Amazon is ready to launch a streaming video service to compete head-on with Netflix in the US. Subscribers to their Amazon Prime unlimited DVD rental service will also be able to stream new movies and TV shows, reports US blog Engadget.

Netflix matches $7.99 Hulu Plus subscription price

Netflix moving in on premium cable services

Netflix’s offer of unlimited access to over 20,000 movies and TV programmes for a monthly $8.99 (€6.40) subscription fee could seriously hurt premium cable services. Recent figures from the US market show that Netflix represents more than 20% of downstream traffic during peak times and is heaviest between 20.00 and 22.00 – television’s prime time.

Netflix opens NBC Universal vaults

Netflix and NBC Universal have announced an agreement to stream prior season cable and broadcast TV series to Netflix subscribers. The service is available by subscription with pricing starting at $8.99 (€6.66) a month.

Survey says: 1-in-3 leave cable for Netflix

How much of a threat to traditional pay-TV are Over The Top services such as Netflix? A recent study carried out on behalf of Credit Suisse found that 37% of Netflix subscribers aged 25 to 34 substitute Netflix for pay-TV.
