Opera Software has announced that it has joined the cross-industry consortium that is leading the Hybrid Broadcast Broadband TV (HbbTV) initiative.

The Technical Committee of the European Broadcasting Union has agreed a set of measures for Hybrid Broadcast Broadband (HBB) services and devices.
The Italian digital television association DGTVi has added broadband connectivity to its specifications for HDTV receivers.
IBC 2009 – Amsterdam. “It is the EBU job to try and harmonise the initiatives for internet to the TV services,” said Peter MacAvock of the EBU. Over-the-top delivery of content on hybrid devices is one of the hot issues at this year’s IBC.
IFA 2009 – BERLIN. Several members of the HbbTV consortium are showing a number of applications for hybrid television services. They include broadcasters ARD, ZDF and RTL, the Eutelsat Kabelkiosk platform and manufacturers including Philips and Humax.
The German broadcaster RTL will introduce a new text service using the Hybrid Broadcast Broadband TV (HbbTV) standard. It will launch the service, called HD Text, next year.
A consortium including Canal+, France Televisions, and TF1, German research organisation Institut für Rundfunktechnik, satellite operator SES Astra, as well as the software and media solutions providers ANT and OpenTV, have announced the launch of a new pan-European initiative aimed at harmonising the delivery of broadcast and broadband content.
