APPSWORLD – LONDON. Freesat will be evolving its platform strategy over the next 12 months in the areas of second screen technology and apps development, according to James Strickland, director, product and technology development.
Sagemcom has been confirmed as the lead manufactuer on Freesat’s next generation of set-top boxes, slated for launch in early 2012.
Freesat has said it has exceeded its original sales targets, announcing total sales of two million units in the three years since its launch. The total value of retail sales is put at £1 billion.
The BBC Trust has said the BBC can continue to play a part in Freesat following its approval of plans to include pay-TV content. BBC director-general Mark Thompson has defended the role of free-to-air broadcasters in the distribution of content and development of technical platforms. In a speech to the Oxford Media Convention, Thompson said the promise of getting as close as possible to universal availability was at the heart of the public service broadcasting contract.
The BBC has confirmed BBC One HD will launch on satellite on Wednesday, November 3. The channel will broadcast on the same Astra transponder as the current BBC HD pilot channel and is being made available on Freeview, Freesat, Sky and Virgin Media.
