SCART: (Syndicat des Constructeurs d’Appareils Radiorécepteurs et Téléviseurs) is a French originated standard connector used to connect audio visual equipment. A long rectangular connector, with up to 21 different pins, it can be used to carry various signals such as RGB and composite. Using SCART provides better connectivity between equipment such as VCRs, set-top boxes and TVs.
SDH (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy): A standard technology for synchronous data transmission on optical media. It is the international equivalent of SONET. Both technologies provide faster and less expensive network interconnection than traditional equipment. SDH uses transport modules up to 10 Gbps.
Set-top box: A cable, satellite or IPTV box that is placed “on top” of a TV by which additional services to the basic cable service become accessible. A variety of new set-top boxes are being developed to host internet and interactive TV.
Side Channels: An occasional channel broadcast to carry a special event or service and promoted by a regular linear channel.
SMATV (Satellite Master Antenna Television System): Systems that serve a concentration of TV sets such as an apartment building, hotel, etc., utilizing one central antenna to pick up broadcast and/or satellite signals.
Smart TV: A television that has the ability to be connected to the internet, pulling in a variety of content, such as news, weather, sports, catch-up TV or video-on-demand, through apps and widgets (also known as connected TV).
SOHO: A term for the small office or home office environment and business culture.
Startover TV: On demand feature that allows viewers to start viewing a scheduled programme from the top of the show instead of joining halfway through.
Streaming: Delivery of packets of data at a constant rate, which enhances speech, music and video transmission.
SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics): Method of displaying images in set-top box middleware.
SVOD: Subscription video on demand.
