The HbbTV Association has launched the HbbTV Application Showcase, a new online hub designed to highlight real-world deployments of HbbTV services from broadcasters, platform operators and technology providers.
The showcase brings together examples of interactive TV applications from different markets, demonstrating how HbbTV is being used across broadcast and connected TV environments.
Initial applications include interactive programme enhancements, on-demand catalogues, EPGs, FAST channel access, gaming, accessibility features, interactive advertising and addressable advertising.
The association said the platform is intended to become a central reference point for developers, product teams and broadcasters exploring HbbTV deployments.
A key theme of the launch is HbbTV’s position as a common application layer across connected TVs, allowing a single application to run across multiple device ecosystems without the need to maintain separate versions for proprietary operating systems.
“The HbbTV Application Showcase is an important new resource for our community. It brings together top-level, real-world examples of HbbTV applications, demonstrating the richness and diversity of services enabled by the open standard,” said Vincent Grivet.
“These applications highlight how HbbTV enables seamless, engaging and interactive viewing experiences, bringing together a wide range of services within a consistent connected TV environment.”
The showcase launches initially with selected entries from recent HbbTV Awards participants, providing examples from different markets and implementation approaches.
Industry stakeholders are being invited to submit additional applications through the HbbTV developer portal.
The move comes as HbbTV continues to expand beyond its original catch-up TV use cases into areas including addressable advertising, broadcaster aggregation, FAST channel integration and accessibility services.
Recent deployments have increasingly focused on broadcaster streaming aggregation and IP-delivered services. In New Zealand, Freeview recently announced plans for Freeview NextGen based on DVB-I, while HbbTV itself continues to underpin hybrid services such as Freely in the UK and multiple broadcaster platforms across Europe.
The launch also follows growing use of HbbTV in advertising. ITV recently launched Live Addressable+, extending addressable capabilities across live linear channels, while broadcasters across Germany and Central Europe continue to expand HbbTV-based targeted advertising deployments.
The showcase is available through the HbbTV developer portal at the association’s website.
