The UEFA Champions League final will not be shown free-to-air in the UK for the first time since 1992.
The final between PSG and Arsenal on May 30 in Budapest will be available only to TNT Sports subscribers or through HBO Max, both of which require a paid subscription.
The match will be available to basic HBO subscribers, making a neat promotional tool for the streaming service that is still relatively new in the UK market.
Since the European Cup was relaunched as the Champions League, the final had traditionally been available free-to-air in the UK, first on ITV and then through free access provided by TNT Sports and its predecessor BT Sport.
The move also affects the Europa League and Conference League finals involving English clubs, with Aston Villa facing Freiburg and Crystal Palace playing Rayo Vallecano.
Warner Bros. Discovery currently holds UK rights to UEFA’s main European club competitions through TNT Sports.
From the 2027/28 season, those rights will change hands, with Paramount taking the Champions League and Sky Sports securing the Europa League and Conference League.
However, Paramount is currently in the process of acquiring TNT’s ultimate parent Warner Bros Discovery, creating the possibility that the UK rights to the UEFA competitions across the UK may stay exactly where they are.
