Mainstream Media to launch FAST Channel AKIBA Anime

April 14, 2026 09.18 Europe/London By Jörn Krieger

German broadcaster Mainstream Media is expanding its FAST portfolio with the launch of a new free, ad‑supported anime channel scheduled for summer 2026.

The service, branded AKIBA Anime, is being developed in partnership with German publisher peppermint anime, marking the company’s first collaboration with the specialist distributor.

The new channel will offer a curated line‑up of well‑known anime series, including titles such as Demon Slayer, Sword Art Online and Fire Force (pictured). Programmes will be arranged in themed blocks and refreshed on a regular basis. AKIBA Anime will be available as a linear FAST Channel across multiple platforms and targets viewers aged 16 and above, as well as adults with an interest in high‑quality, story‑driven series.

Anime continues to enjoy strong momentum in Germany, supported by a long broadcast history dating back to the 1970s. The genre’s distinctive visual style, narrative depth and cultural influences have helped build a loyal and expanding audience. Industry observers note that anime in Germany is increasingly viewed as a premium entertainment category rather than a niche segment.

The collaboration with peppermint anime brings one of Germany’s leading anime publishers into Mainstream Media’s FAST strategy. Founded in 2012, peppermint anime is known for high‑quality releases across Blu‑ray, DVD, digital platforms and cinema, and maintains close ties with the German anime community.

“AKIBA Anime brings the genre to the environments where viewers now discover new TV offerings – on smart TVs and streaming platforms, free of charge and carefully curated,” said Tim Werner, CEO of Mainstream Media. “Together with peppermint anime, we are creating a channel that appeals to dedicated fans and newcomers alike.”

Patrick Keller, Managing Director of peppermint anime, added: “Anime has become a relevant premium genre with a large, loyal audience in Germany. By placing high‑quality series in a free, linear environment, AKIBA Anime reaches viewers who are difficult to engage via traditional on‑demand platforms.”

The launch forms part of Mainstream Media’s broader strategy to scale special‑interest content through FAST Channels. AKIBA Anime will join the company’s existing portfolio, which comprises a mix of pay‑TV brands such as GoldStar TV, Heimatkanal and Romance TV, as well as Romance TV Polska, along with streaming channels including Filmgold, World of Freesports, Kultkrimi and Telenovela ZDF.
