KiKA launches HbbTV-enabled smart TV app on StreamingOS

April 9, 2026 15.43 Europe/London By Broadband TV News Correspondent

KiKA, the children’s channel operated by German public broadcasters ARD and ZDF, has launched a fully redesigned smart TV and HbbTV offering, introducing a new children-focused streaming experience based on the joint StreamingOS platform developed by ARD and ZDF.

The updated application is available from today and positions KiKA among the first public service offerings to adopt the shared technical infrastructure, designed to improve efficiency and scalability across both broadcasters’ digital services.

Built on StreamingOS, the new KiKA app integrates core components such as a unified video player and recommendation algorithms, enabling a more consistent user experience across devices. The move is intended to strengthen the public broadcasters’ streaming ecosystem while delivering a safe, ad-free environment tailored to children and families.

The updated service introduces a redesigned interface optimised for younger audiences, with simplified navigation to make content discovery faster and more intuitive. A “My Videos” section allows users to bookmark favourites and resume playback, while the KiKA livestream is now accessible via the HbbTV app for the first time.

Accessibility and usability have also been enhanced through improved search functions, filtering options for audio description and sign language content, and a structured A-Z catalogue.

The development process included testing with children and parents, who described the interface as intuitive, modern and trustworthy, highlighting in particular the clear layout and breadth of on-demand content beyond the linear channel, according to KiKA.

“With our new smart TV offering, we are bringing the perspectives and needs of children and parents into the technical evolution of the public service ecosystem. The early adoption of the shared StreamingOS marks a milestone for delivering future-proof, safe and child-friendly digital media use,” said KiKA Managing Director Roman Twork.

Bertram Gugel, Head of Platforms at the ARD Tech Unit, added: “Our shared infrastructure is the foundation for excellent audience offerings. The successful implementation of the KiKA project is an important signal and model for further expanding our technical collaboration.”

StreamingOS combines the technology stacks of the ARD and ZDF media libraries into a shared, open-source platform aimed at increasing independence and digital sovereignty. It supports cross-service user profiles and personalised recommendations and is positioned as a foundation for a broader European media and technology ecosystem.
