RTVE is preparing to launch a new cultural television channel in June as part of an expanded collaboration with European cultural broadcaster ARTE, in a move that could further reshape Spain’s free-to-air landscape.
RTVE has officially confirmed both the planned June launch window for the new service and that it is working on a broader agreement with ARTE.
The Spanish public broadcaster has appointed Ana Peláez to lead its new Arts and Knowledge division, with responsibility for launching and running the channel. RTVE said the service is due to begin transmissions in June and forms part of a wider push into cultural programming.
According to Spanish trade reports, the project is being developed around performing arts, Spanish cinema, classical music, opera, new music trends and original production, with RTVE in discussions to position the service as ARTE España.
RTVE has itself linked an enviable €45 million surplus to the rollout of the cultural channel.
ARTE already operates as a European cultural media group jointly backed by ARTE France and ARTE Deutschland, with multilingual distribution across several markets, including a Spanish-language digital presence.
If confirmed in its current form, the RTVE-ARTE initiative would give Spain a dedicated public cultural outlet with stronger European links, while adding another dimension to the country’s evolving DTT and streaming strategy.
