Canal+ has secured what it described as a landmark win in its anti-piracy campaign after the Paris Court of Appeal ruled on March 27 in favour of blocking illegal streaming and IPTV services via alternative DNS providers including Google, Cloudflare and Cisco.
The group said the decision is the first of its kind in France and confirms that such blocking measures are both technically feasible and proportionate.
The ruling builds on earlier French court decisions targeting other parts of the internet delivery chain. Canal+ wins French appeal court backing for anti-piracy DNS blocks+ said internet service providers were first ordered to block illegal streaming sites in 2022, followed by alternative DNS providers in 2024, and CDN, proxy and VPN providers in 2025, including a Paris Judicial Court order last May covering five VPN services.
Canal+ said the latest appeal court judgment is in line with its wider strategy of forcing technical intermediaries to play a greater role in tackling audiovisual piracy. The broadcaster added that further measures, including IP blocking, are expected to be rolled out progressively.
