Virgin Media O2 has connected 1 million digitally excluded people across the UK, meeting a key target set under its Better Connections Plan sustainability strategy.
The operator said the milestone marks the completion of its 2022–2025 commitment to tackle digital exclusion through a combination of free data, devices and expanded network access, alongside partnerships with charities and community organisations.
The programme has focused on supporting vulnerable groups including low-income families, rural communities, people experiencing homelessness and survivors of domestic abuse.
In addition to direct connectivity, Virgin Media O2 said it has provided 8.5 million people with digital skills training and online safety advice, significantly exceeding its original target of 6 million.
Central to the initiative is the National Databank, delivered in partnership with Good Things Foundation, which offers free O2 mobile data via retail stores. The scheme has connected more than 500,000 people to date.
Other measures include the expansion of 4G coverage under the Shared Rural Network, social tariffs for customers receiving government support, and device donation schemes such as Community Calling, which has redistributed more than 32,000 devices.
The company has also confirmed plans to donate a further 12,000 refurbished smartphones in 2026, matching its 2025 commitment.
Partnerships with organisations including UK Youth, nexfibre and Jangala have extended connectivity through free Wi-Fi and portable hubs, while collaborations with Internet Matters and Good Things Foundation’s Learn My Way platform have supported digital literacy.
Nicola Green, Chief Communications and Corporate Affairs Officer at Virgin Media O2, said access to connectivity and skills “is a game-changer”, enabling people to access essential services and employment opportunities.
The milestone also supports the UK government’s Digital Inclusion Action Plan. Digital Economy Minister Liz Lloydsaid the initiative demonstrates how industry and government can work together to “close the digital divide” and unlock wider economic growth.
Virgin Media O2 said it will continue to expand its programmes as it looks to connect more underserved communities across the UK.
