Vodafone Germany is preparing to upgrade its cable infrastructure with next‑generation multi‑gigabit capabilities through a collaboration with Huber+Suhner and Aurora Networks.
The two technology suppliers will support Vodafone’s adoption of Distributed Access Architecture (DAA) and Virtual CMTS (vCMTS) technologies, which decentralise key network processing functions and push them closer to end users. According to the companies, this approach improves speed, stability and overall performance while extending the life of existing Hybrid Fibre Coax (HFC) assets.
Vodafone Germany has already deployed the technologies in its live network. “We are excited to be working with Aurora Networks and Huber+Suhner,” said Michael Rabes, Director of Fixed Access Engineering at Vodafone Germany. “The collaboration with Aurora Networks and Huber+Suhner is long-term and promotes future cooperation. The DAA and vCMTS technologies have been deployed in the live network. Our joint efforts will help Vodafone deliver a reliable and high-quality cable network assuring the best user experience to its customers today and in the future.”
Aurora Networks, part of Vistance Networks, is providing its vCCAP Evo platform and QAM video solutions, which run on commercial off‑the‑shelf servers. According to the company, this virtualised approach offers higher density and capacity than hardware‑based CMTS systems, while reducing rack space, energy consumption and operational costs. Aurora Networks is also acting as the end‑to‑end DAA system integrator for the project.
“We’re thrilled to welcome Vodafone to our expanding roster of global operators that have adopted vCCAP Evo,” said Guy Sucharczuk, SVP & President, Aurora Networks. “vCCAP Evo will enable Vodafone to significantly optimise the performance of its network, deliver multi-gigabit services to subscribers and to realise significant energy and cost savings in the headend.”
Huber+Suhner will supply next‑generation Remote PHY devices with full software interoperability to strengthen Vodafone’s cable access network. The Swiss connectivity provider has a long-standing relationship with Vodafone, having supplied analogue optical and RF technologies for previous generations of the operator’s cable infrastructure.
“This partnership is an important continuation of our support as the cable network solution provider for Vodafone,” said Jürgen Walter, COO Communication Segment, Huber+Suhner. “Many analogue optical and RF technology solutions from Huber+Suhner have helped evolve Vodafone’s cable network during the past decades. We look forward to using our deep and mature knowhow to further increase network quality and performance for Vodafone’s cable network customers in Germany.”
According to the companies, the combined DAA and vCMTS deployment will give Vodafone a more scalable and energy‑efficient platform for future broadband services, while enabling subscribers to benefit from faster and more reliable connectivity with minimal disruption.
