RTÉ has confirmed it has received payment from the GAA for RTÉ’s 50% shareholding in GAAGO, completing the sale of its stake in the streaming service.
The broadcaster said it had agreed “in principle” in February 2025 to sell its interest in GAOGO and reinvest the proceeds in public service content and delivery, subject to the necessary consents and approvals. RTÉ said those approvals are now in place and receipt of payment means the transaction has formally closed.
Kevin Bakhurst, RTÉ Director-General, said the GAOGO joint venture with the GAA, launched in 2014, “was a game changer”, enabling fans of Gaelic games worldwide to access Ireland’s national sports. He also highlighted the platform’s importance during the pandemic, when supporters were unable to attend matches in person.
RTÉ will use the proceeds from the sale — €3 million — to invest in its regional studios and production facilities, with a focus on Cork, Limerick and Galway.
“The completion of the sale means that we can make good on our commitment to reinvest these funds in the production of programming and content for audiences, particularly in our regional production studios and facilities outside Dublin,” Bakhurst said.
He added that RTÉ wished the GAA continued success with its GAA+ service and said the broadcaster looks forward to continuing to work with the association in supporting Gaelic games.
GAAGO was established in 2014 as a joint venture between RTÉ and the GAA.
