Viaplay is expanding its British Isles football portfolio after securing rights to stream every match from the EFL Championship.
The streamer said the deal lifts its total British football output to 552 matches per season across the Premier League, the Championship and England’s domestic cups, including the EFL Cup and FA Cup.
Viaplay expert Jonas Olsson, who previously played in the Championship with West Bromwich and Wigan, described the league as the “most physical” and highlighted the intensity of the 46-game season and the play-off race down to 6th place.
The Championship features 24 clubs competing for 3 promotion places to the Premier League and includes established names such as Blackburn, Leicester, Middlesbrough, Southampton, Millwall and West Bromwich Albion.
Erik Westberg, Viaplay’s head of sport, said the acquisition strengthens Viaplay’s position in the market and underpins its “Home of British Football” branding in Sweden.
All British Isles football will be streamed on Viaplay, with the Championship, Carabao Cup and FA Cup also carried on the linear channel Viaplay Sport. Viaplay Sport is included in base tiers from Telia, Telenor, Allente and Sappa, and is also available via the Viaplay Medium and Viaplay Total packages.
